Giro D’Italia Stage 9 – Over already?

SBS finally came to the party and showed stage 9 of the Giro live (well from 11:25pm onwards missing more than the first half of the race) SBS picked up the broadcast as the race started to heat up, a break was up the road and were starting to look as though they may just have a chance to take the stage, maybe!

The last 18km or so of todays stage went up the side of the currently “waiting to explode” volcanoe Mt Etna. The final climb was the hardest of the day after the peleton took in a different route over the mountain early in the stage (Riding twice over a smoking volcanoe – epic!)

The break was down to 3 men on the last climb with the favourites bunch a few minutes back, a couple of solo breaks, including a strong break by what looked like a muscular skinny midget from Argentina named José Rujano Guillen who looked perfectly suited to smashing out tempo on a steep mountain climb.

It was the race favourite Alberto CUNTODOR who took the initiative and smashed the Bejuses out of the other favourites with a big ring attack that left everyone searching for answers. Scarfacedpony answered the call and managed to get onto Cuntodor’s wheel before pistelero attacked again and basically blew scarface backwards into the peleton.

From there it was a formality as Cuntodor set a decent tempo over the final 3km with José Guillen holding on for dear life before Alberto got bored and took off for home also leaving the Midget argentinian searching wondering where Cuntodor was keeping his MOTOR.

In the end Cuntodor was far far to strong for anyone else in the field who were made to look like B grade Neo Pro’s in comparison. It will be very very hard to see anyone coming near Alberto over the next couple of weeks and in my opinion he will end up winning the tour by 3 or 4 minutes if not a lot more.

Why would Alberto attack so early in the tour? I think he may be trying to get an unassailable lead before the final week’s riding where he can sit back and take it easy, saving his legs for the Tour De France. Either that or he just got bored and decided today was a good day to make everyone else look lame.

I dont much like the guy but you have to admire his final dominant climb over Mt Etna today! Brilliant – reminded me of Marco Pantani

STAGE 9 HIGHLIGHTS (sorry cant find a decent highlight package that will let me embed the video into a post)
